Mutual Life of Canada

Founded in 1868 in Waterloo, Ontario as the Ontario Mutual Life Assurance Company, the organization rebranded in 1900 as Mutual Life of Canada. In 1901, they opened a small office in Winnipeg, eventually taking over the fourth floor of 211 McDermot Avenue in 1906. By 1959, they erected their own, two-storey building at 1111 Portage Avenue. 

The company was acquired and rebranded several times over the years. In 1988, they became part of the Mutual Group and changed their name to Clarica in 1999. Sun Life Financial combined operations with the Waterloo company in 2002 and now operates under that banner.
